SUMMER IN THE CITY
By: Shaye Mitchell - shayed007@hotmail.com
Seattle, summer is just around the corner. It is time to hit the mall, wash your car, start the BBQ and do it BIG!! When the sun comes out, so do people you haven't seen all year, so it is important to know what's going down. Whether you listen to old school, R & B, or hip hop, there is something for everyone this summer, and with venues like Pier 62/63, the Gorge, Key Arena, Seattle Center and the Paramount Theater, it is about to be busy. Beginning in June, the concert schedule keeps it moving through August, so pay attention, take note and get ready. The always too funny Cedric the Entertainer will be at the Paramount Theater June 15. The extremely talented and somewhat overlooked group Blackalicious will be at the Showbox June 18, followed by the much hyped, long awaited, No More Drama tour bringing everyone's favorite Ms. Mary J. Blige to Key Arena June 19. We all saw her performance at the Grammy's, and now it's time to see it live. June 22, E-40 is back in Seattle at the Moore Theater. E-40 is definitely worth seeing and the venue is small enough to keep it live!! For those looking to entertain the family and make the kids happy, don't miss Lil' Romeo as he does his thing at Safeco Field June 25 before the Mariner's game. One price for the game and to see Lil' Romeo's performance so there's no reason not to. To scratch the comedy itch one more time, check out Bruce Bruce and Mo'Nique as they bring the Heavyweights of Comedy to the Paramount Theater July 13.
Summer Nights at the Pier will bring Lauryn Hill July 16, the same day KUBE 93's Summer Jam 10 will be at the Gorge in George. Summer Jam is sold out, so if you don't have tickets, check out Lauryn Hill at the Pier. Eminem, Ludacris, Xzibit, Papa Roach and the X-Ecutioners will be bringing the Anger Management Tour to the Tacoma Dome August 6 and to the Rose Garden in Portland August 7. Ms. Alicia Keys will bring her Grammy Award winning talents to Key Arena August 10. This is Ms. Keys' first major tour, and, after watching her live at the Grammy's, it will be off the hook. She's beautiful, talented, and ready to entertain. Just when y'all thought enough was enough, Bumbershoot provides a finale to this summer's concert line-up with confirmed appearances from Nappy Roots, Wyclef Jean, Blackalicious, Maceo Parker, reggae from the Itals, and underground hip hop from Lifesavas. Jump on your 2-way, call your girl, plan early, choose carefully, enjoy yourselves and remember that there is always something to do in Seattle, you just have to be in the know.
