Seattle's Unknown Program

Seattle University (est. 1891) is a small Jesuit University like its sister schools Georgetown and Boston College, and is located in the First Hill neighborhood between Capital Hill and the Central District. Under the direction of Father Stephen Sundborg, S.J., Seattle University has been working vigorously towards rebuilding the athletic programs while maintaining the tradition in high academic standards.

Many people, including locals, are surprised when they hear Seattle University and Seattle Pacific University are two completely different entities. Yet more surprised to hear Seattle University carries basketball history and has competed in the NCAA Division I basketball finals, let by basketball legend Elgin Baylor ('57-'58). The basketball teams at Seattle University are starting up their third Season under the school's new mascot the "Red Hawks" (formerly Chieftains). Along with the change of the mascot came a new Athletic Director, Todd Shilperoort (2nd year). He has been charged with providing the essential tools for the athletic programs to succeed.

One major change he has aided in is the installment of a new floor in the "North Court." This floor will impact the teams tremendously as it rests on top of added support and thus further away from the cement foundation. With a softer floor in place, there will be a reduction of injuries keeping the "best team" on the court. The Second major change coming to the team's gym is the addition of bleachers along the North wall. For many years fans have crowded onto the present set of bleachers positioned along the South wall.

Also new to Seattle University athletics is the Men's Basketball staff. Head coach Joe Callero and his assistants Tyler Geving and Brandon Blake have put much effort into recruiting to compete in their first season together. To compliment their returning players, this exceptional staff has obtained six new student/athletes combining for a young, but experienced group. Although a lot has changed for Seattle University, one piece of the Basketball formula has remained constant for 22 years, women's coach Dave Cox. He has guided the women's basketball team to over 300 wins in his 21 years as women's head coach, and served as interim head coach for the men's team last year. Happy to be back with his women's team for the upcoming season, he anticipates participating in post-season play.
