Skiggy Ska, Lil' Hyphie, Lil' E, Styxx, Mr.Ro and Robo are the making of Homegrown. Boise's most controversial group has come back with a vengeance to those who doubted them. With their freshman album to be released in summer of this year Homegrown has made quite a name for themselves in the Boise underground hip-hop scene. From some of there members on a forced vacation to the much talked about Mad-Ro controversy Homegrown has showed us that they are not going anywhere and anyone that wants to step up will get lyrically shutdown. I had the pleasure of talking to three of the six members about what is going on with them and how they are handling the controversy that surrounds them. Be prepared for the most raw and uncut interview to come out of Boise.
J- What's up guys? You ready for this?
SS- (laughs) Yeah!
J- How did Homegrown start?
SS- It started by me doin' solo sh*t, then more and more people started to come to my house to record and we made it a group project.
Ro- I have been rappin' forever, I did sh*t with Mad-Ro back in the day.
J- There was an album out previous to The Project right?
SS- Yeah it was Bob ya head, my solo sh*t.
J- Describe the contents of that album.
SS- Practice beginning type sh*t, I was just tryin to get better at what I was doin'.
J- Who were the contributors on that album?
SS- Ro, Lil' E, Dice, B.G., L.C., and Kilo.
J- Where is that album out at?
SS- I am not tryin to push that shi*t.
Ro- But it's a classic.
SS- I like the new sh*t better man.
Ro- I made some underground sh*t during all this but not an album, just a few three hit singles. I never came out with an album. I don't know what the f**k happened. But I like my old sh*t.
J- How is your second album different from the first?
SS- It sounds more professional.
Hyphie- The first album we were inexperienced. Our second, we are lettin' niggas know what's up. We are givin' them real hip-hop.
J- Who is the girl that sings on the album?
SS- Kristin. We also have this girl Brandi and Green Eyes sings on one of the songs. Shaun-B sings on it and Grim B.
Ro- Don't forget the Grim bizzle!
SS- Our second album establishes Homegrown.
J- This is out where?
SS- It ain't out yet.
J- When do you expect it to come out, is there an official release date?
SS- Within a few months we are working on the final sh*t, like the pictures and sh*t.
J- By summer
SS- Yeah
Ro- By then everyone will have heard our underground copy. (laughing)
SS- No sh*t huh?
J- What do you like best about this album?
SS- You can play this album all the way through, it is well rounded we got sh*t for everybody, we got sh*t for the club, we got sh*t for girls, guys, gangstas whoever.
J- What is your favorite song?
SS- "Ooh Daddy" it has everyone on it.
Ro- I like "Ooh Daddy."
SS- And I like "What the f**k is going on".
Ro- I like that one song, f**k what is it called?
SS- what song?
Ro- It goes I don't give a f**k no more I'm comin up.
SS-I knew you were going to say that sh*t- "Comin up."
Ro- That's what it's called.
Hyphie- I like "What the f**k ya'll want" and "Ooh Daddy."
J- Okay now let's get serious for a minute, I would like to bring up the Mad-Ro controversy. What is the first word you think of when I say Mad-Ro?
Hyphie- Gotta tell you like this-Mad-Hoes!
Ro- Arcturus
SS- Wannabe Backstreet boys.
Ro- I think Arcturus, he is always trying to be in the spotlight.
J-What is the beef?
SS- They wanted to talk sh*t so we came back lyrically.
Hyphie-These motha f**kers want to come out with their sh*t talkin' 'bout the hood's been good to ya and they don't know what the f**k a hood is. They want to diss my ni**a Ska well f**k them, Dice ain't sh*t either.
J- You gave them shout outs on your first album what happened?
SS- They helped me out on the first album and sh*t-They just don't want to see anyone else come up so they try to hold ni**as down. I have had plenty of opportunities to diss them before and I didn't out of respect, I never liked their music but once they talked sh*t I was like f**k it it's on from there.
Hyphie- They are hatin cuz their sh*t came out from some Body and Soul collection and they are weak. How you gonna hate when none of you can rap. Let's battle, I will shut you down lyrically. If you all ain't to pu**y then bring it on.
J- So, this was Mad-Ro [instigated] is what you are sayin'?
SS- Yeah they started the sh*t, I am glad they started it.
J- Now Dice said some things to you any response?
SS- I responded on the song. I really have no problem with Hacim or Ready cuz they aren't part of this. It is Chris and Dice.
J-What do you have to say to them?
SS- F**k y'all. You can't f**k wit us PERIOD.
J- How do you think Boise will react to your Mad-Hoes song.
SS- Hella Motha f**kers have already told us they thought it was dope. They love that sh*t.
Ro- Nobody I have talked to have came up to me and said Mad-Ro is my favorite group. They ain't trippin. (Laughing)
J- Your CD will be controversial because of this song and the fact that you were the first to step up, does that bother you?
SS- I knew that when I made the song and I don't give a f**k
J- What are your goals you want to achieve with his album?
Ro- I just want ni**as to hear my sh*t and bump it and think 'damn these cats are from Boise?' I want it to be everywhere.
J- What's the first single?
SS- Ooh Daddy or What's your name?
J- Any date set?
SS- Not yet but I will keep you updated.
J- Thank you guys for talkin' to me and keep me updated.
SS- Fo sho.
Homegrown is definitely a group to look for; they are not afraid to tell everyone what they think and are ready for whatever comes their way. Look for their album The Project in stores this summer.
