Dirty
Jerz is back y’all. Joe Budden, everybody’s ’03 #1 draft pick
has just dropped his self titled debut after burning up the
mixtape market. The word on Budden was that he was going to
bring something the game has been lacking – emotion and
reality.
Budden has been hyped to death in NY and it appears as if the
hype was warranted. The kid is lyrically ill. On 17 tracks the
east coast rhyme spitter brings the heat and gives you a look
at his life, a life marked by more drama than you can shake a
forty oz. at. For those who ain’t heard, Budden is one of the
few rappers you won’t hear spittin’ tales of being drunk as
hell and actin’ the fool. A recovering drug addict Joe started
rhyming as therapy to deal with all the heat he caught as a
kid running the street. On the stand out track Calm Down, he
goes into it and gives you a look at where he was and how he
got past it.
But far from being just about the drama, Budden gives you some
club heat with the underground smash Pump It Up. Just Blaze
provides the beat on this track, and listening to it, it ain’t
hard to tell why Budden has been getting the attention he has.
Another track sure to be banging the club is Fire, featuring
everybody’s favorite party man Busta Rhymes. Another Just
Blaze burner, Fire showcases the pure dopeness Budden is
capable of bringing.
Other standout tracks include Walk With Me, a study in what
happens when a local boy makes good, Focus, another
underground favorite, Real Life And Rap, on which Joey takes
aim at all these cats spittin’ street talk they haven’t lived,
and Porno Star, which is pretty self explanatory.
Overall there are only two problems with this album. One,
sometimes the production can get a little boring, it’s not
that it isn’t good, its just that sometimes you wish there was
a little more variety. Two, Budden is capable of flipping a
bunch of different styles and occasionally you wish he would
switch it up a little bit. That being said, this is one of the
best things to drop this year and it should definitely be on
your list of records to pick up.
