Big up to the Vikings who rose
up a spot to #1 on the USA Today Super 25. Beach grabbed the top
spot after LeBron James’ school beat #1 Oak Hill Academy from VA.
The Vikings will be tested early, as they prepare to face the fifth
ranked team in the nation at the Academy National Invitational
tournament in Houston next week. For more on the Beach hoop squad,
be sure to check out Starters (narrated by yours truly) on
the Starz/Encore network.
A Pennsylvania judge sentenced
Carlos Lomax to 37 months in federal prison for unauthorized credit
card use. The 42-year old Lomax opened 14 credit accounts under
Smith’s name and charged almost $33,000 at Pittsburgh area stores.
When the feds searched Lomax’s crib, they found receipts in Smith’s
name, and proof that he was trying to defraud other celebs as well.
At the time of his arrest, Lomax was on probation for conning San
Antonio Spurs guard Steve Smith out of $81,000. The judge also
ordered Lomax to pay $67,000 back to Smith’s credit card companies.
The legendary west coast MC is
set to drop The Deuce late next February. The D.O.C. went
the independent route, releasing his new joint on his own Silverback
Records label. The Deuce should have a sound similar to the
#1 album No One Can Do It Better, which came out in 1989.
D.O.C. enlisted the likes of Dr. Dre, MC Ren, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube,
and Kurupt to lend guest vocals on the album. Production should be
on point as well, with Dre, Jazze Pha, and Organized Noise
contributing beats.
Tha Alkaholiks linked with
Playboy to produce the upcoming Tha Alkaholiks 10th
Anniversary DVD. Hef and company apparently liked Tha Liks
X.O. Experience DVD, and are bringing the Playboy bunnies along
for the show. Tha Liks just signed a one-album deal with Artist
Direct, but may be joining Snoop’s Dogg House Records in the near
future. As Jose reported a while back, Tha Liks are no longer down
with Xzibit, and have just released an underground dis track titled
“The X Homie”. Looks like the L.A. based trio may finally start
getting the props they deserve.
Soft drink giant Pepsi-Cola
recently picked Beyonce Knowles to star in their upcoming ad
campaigns. The beautiful Destiny’s Child singer will star in two TV
commercials, and also appear in various online, radio, and print
ads. Pepsi may also sponsor Beyonce’s tour that will promote her
debut solo album. Knowles will replace Britney Spears, who was
dropped by Pepsi for undisclosed reasons.
Shyne (aka Jamaal Barrow) and
his attorney Murray Richman submitted a request to have his case
dismissed due to not receiving a fair trial. Shyne was convicted of
reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm, and assault for the
Puffy/J-Lo club shooting back in ’99. Shyne and his lawyer claim he
did not get a fair trial because of the legal representation he
had. Puff hired Benjamin Brafman to defend Shyne, while retaining
ace defense attorney Johnny Cochran for his own trial. Shyne
apparently wants to testify that Diddy actually fought Scar Allen
after he threw a wad of money in Puffy’s face. Shyne’s defense will
also argue that both his and Puff’s lawyers conspired to give Diddy
the best chance of an acquittal, and basically left Shyne out in the
cold. Shyne is currently serving a 10-year sentence and is not
eligible for parole until 2009. If the case does get dismissed,
Shyne should have no problem finding work. Rumor has it that Murder
INC. is first in line to sign the currently incarcerated MC.
But not that way. The
LBC’s top dogg hosted his 1st Annual Snoop Bowl to
benefit the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital and the Long Beach Boy’s
& Girl’s Club. It’s a good thing that Snoop is now smoke free
because his All Star squad squared off against the Inland Empire
Police in the charity event. Even Rodney King was on hand to watch
Snoop’s team beat the cops 33-21.
Loud Record’s founder recently
linked with Universal to start SRC Records. The new imprint will
have offices in the Universal building in New York, and is
officially setting up shop in early January. SRC has already inked
deals with artists from Detroit and Orlando, so this may be a good
resource for any unsigned artists trying to get on. Rifkind wants
to SRC to be similar to Loud, but on a smaller scale with more
street credibility. Loud Records folded earlier in the year, but is
the same label to launch the careers of such artists as Wu Tang,
Mobb Deep, and Tha Liks.
