Eminem Barks Back at Benzino

Co-owner of the Source and leader of Boston’s Made Men crew, Ray Benzino has had some choice words for Eminem recently.  On a mixtape, Benzino declared “The only M&M I know is Made Men / and by the way, he ain't never gonna play me, never/I 'll show this bitch really what it is to be Shady/ I don't care how much records you sold/ You can't walk through the hood without the men in black/ Disrespect your moms, bitch, you deserve a smack!”  Benzino also dissed Em for changing his style in an attempt to get more respect from the hood.  Em replied with “Fuck a relationship, we through/ no more of The Source’s street credit, them days is dead/ Ray's got AK's at Dave Mays' head/ every issue, there's an eight-page Made Men spread...put me on your fuckin' cover just to sell your little sellout mag/ I ain't mad, I feel bad/ here's an ad, here's a poster of Ray Ray (Benzino's son) and his dad”.  On another track, Slim says “If you're that much of a gangster, put the mic down/ You should be out killin' motherfuckers right now/ ...If you was really selling coke, what the fuck you stop for, dummy/ If you [sold] some crack you'd make a lot more money than you do from rap.”

All-Star Cast Gearing Up for “Self Destruction 2”

In the aftermath of the Jam Master Jay murder, several hip hop artists are coming together to record “Self Destruction 2”.  The charity effort was the brainchild of former Stetsasonic member Daddy-O.  Slated to appear on the record are artists like Busta Rhymes, Common, Chuck D, LL Cool J, KRS One, Ludacris, E-40, DJ Premier, Marley Marl, and many others.  Pioneering DJ’s like Jazzy Jeff, Red Alert, and Jazzy Joyce will be part of the turntablist version of the record.  The original “Self Destruction” was spearheaded by KRS back in 1988 and was one of the first major collaborations dedicated to stopping violence in the hip hop community.

Slick Rick Could Be Deported

Legendary MC Slick Rick had his appeal to not be deported denied by the Board of Immigration.  Rick has been locked up without bail since June, when he was seized while doing a show on a cruise ship.  The INS has been hard on Rick because of a law that gives them the power to deport any non-citizen who served more than 5 years in prison for a felony conviction.  Rick served 5 years and 12 days for an attempted murder bid back in 1996.  The British born rapper has had support of several celebs, most notably Russell Simmons and Will Smith.  Rick’s attorneys have filed an emergency stay of deportation, and are said to be doing everything they can to keep him in the states.

Slim Shady About To Sign Mobb Deep?

Word on the streets is that Eminem is set to sign Mobb Deep to his Shady Records imprint.  When Sony bought out Loud Records, Mobb Deep was left without a record deal and major distribution.  The Queensbridge duo could join fellow Queens MC 50 Cent, who was signed to Shady after a huge bidding war.  Nothing has been confirmed on the move yet, so stay tuned for further updates.

Def Jam Reportedly Boosting SoundScan Numbers

The New York Post recently reported that Def Jam and other labels have manipulated their SoundScan totals.  The way it works is the label ships boxes of new albums for free to independent retailers (aka “Mom & Pop” stores).  The stores make a huge profit since they are selling records that they got for free.  The retailers then report inflated numbers to SoundScan.  One Mom & Pop retailer reportedly sold 3000% more copies of Jay Z’s Blueprint 2 than it actually did.  These false totals help the labels by securing more radio and video play for their artists, and boosting the label’s overall prestige.  Def Jam and SoundScan deny the accusation. Currently, Def Jam is one of the hottest labels around, commanding an 8% market share while its parent company Universal Records is holding a huge 28% share.
