Free Project Pat

Having already served several months behind bars, Project Pat may be getting out the pen soon.  Pat’s lawyers are in the process of appealing his 4-year sentence on weapons charges.  The defense will argue that Pat did not receive a fair trial.  After a Memphis jury could not reach a verdict, Pat was convicted after his trial was moved to nearby Mason, TN.  The prosecution was able to use Pat’s lyrics and footage from the movie Choices as evidence, which pretty much won them the case.  We’ll keep you posted on this one.

Jermaine Dupri Signs New Deal With Arista

J.D. has been doin’ his thing recently.  Besides having Janet as his ol’ lady, Dupri just inked a huge distribution deal with Arista Records.  Dupri is moving his entire So-So Def roster (except Jagged Edge and Bow Wow, who will stay on Columbia) to Arista, and is now the labels’ Senior Vice President.  Besides his executive duties, J.D. will still be an artist/producer.

Chuck D Is Back To Save Hip-Hop

The legendary Public Enemy front man has big plans for 2003.  Although no new PE album is due, Chuck is re-releasing their 1999 joint There’s A Poison Going On with brand new material.  In addition to that, D has a book company called Offda Books and Under the Radar Publishing.  On tap is a collection of Chuck D’s lyrics, along with a book counting down the top 50 MC’s ever, written by Kool Moe Dee.  That’s not all.  Chuck’s label Slam Jamz Records has a new distribution deal with independent giant Koch.  Slam Jamz’ roster includes artists from all over the country, including several female MC’s.  Slam Jamz also has a group called the Imposse Bulls, who came together through the PE message board.  These cats are from all over the globe, and actually get their beats emailed to them.  When the MC’s finish their lyrics, they email them back to Chuck’s producer C Doc, who then mixes them into complete songs.  For more info check out www.slamjamz.com.
