Sea Spot Interview with Bosko
Ya Boy Bosko, He's On Fire!
Interviewed & Written By: Josh Warren
Many of you have heard is sound. If you from the West Coast and listened to any of E-40's albums, from The Element of Surprise, to Breakin' News, you have heard it. Or maybe you from the Mid-West, and have listened to Kanye West College Dropout album, you have heard it. Or maybe you from the south, and listen to T.I. Trap Muzik album, yes, you too have still heard it.
He has worked on all these albums, with these artists, plus many more, and while you may have heard his sound, you may not know who this master of the talk box, super producer is. I got the chance to talk to the hungry yet humble producer, Bosko about everything he has going on right now.
"I'm trying to be on that short list, you know, with Kanye West, Scott Storch, Dr. Dre", said Bosko referring to his steady hustle in the hip-hop producing game that has put his sound on the map over the past ten years. Bosko, a Northwest native hailing from Portland, is not only a super producer though, he is also an artist.
"A lot of people don't know I'm an artist", said Bosko. His recent solo-project, titled Super Producer Bosko Presents: That Fire should put a lot of people on to his talent. On the album, Bosko collaborated with the likes of Lil Jon, DMX, E-40, Bubba Sparks, Cool Nutz, and C-Bo to name a few. "It just another side of Bosko, you get the best of my production on the album as well as me as an artist", he said.
Bosko got his start a little over ten years ago in the Northwest when him and rap artist Cool Nutz decided to start their own label Jus Family Records. "We tried to push our product out to major labels, but they wasn't looking at Portland at all", Bosko stated.
After a successful single (Player Vision) and album (Harsh Game For The People), put out by the two, (with Bosko producing Cool Nutz as an artist) they created a little buzz for themselves and were getting noticed by some major labels. One label that was interested in Bosko was Jive.
"Jive was interested in signing me. [In] Trying to get me to sign they wanted to hook me up with E-40, so they had me do a remix for his song 'Sprinkle Me'. Well I did it and the song took off, I got a lot of love [from it]. 40 heard the song and flew me out to meet him, and we've been connected since, me and him like family now".
Bosko still works with E-40 today. He let me know he had just come back from ATL from working with Lil Jon and E-40 on E-40 new album. Beside those two, according to Bosko, he is also currently working on projects with his Jus Family camp, Too Short, R. Kelly, Jody Breeze, Jazzy Pha, and Little Scrappy as well as working on a new Notorious B.I.G. and Nate Dogg collaboration.
Along with being a producer and artist, Bosko is also on Power 106 in L.A. every Wednesday with Celly Cell. During this weekly show, Bosko works the Talk Box live while artist freestyle live over his live production. His producing talent has even drawn international business. "I'm going to Denmark too, I produced an artist out there who has the number 1 album in Denmark, and his name is L-O-C", Bosko stated.
Although it is evident that Bosko is a seasoned vet in the game and works with a lot of people in the industry, it still shows that a lot of talented producers don't get a lot of recognition. Over the past few years, producers have gained some ground on the publicity level, and a lot have become artists as well.
One thing Bosko explained he liked better about being an artist than a producer is the feedback from the shows he receives. He said the feedback he receives, as an artist keeps him hungry. But don't think he will be trading in the talk box for a microphone anytime soon, as he still got some heat rocks under his sleeve.
When asked, any artist you haven't worked with you would like to work with, Bosko replied and said. If the opportunity came, he wouldn't mind working with Beyonce', Prince, Stevie Wonder, Common and would like to work more closely with Dr. Dre.
Most definitely holding it down for the Northwest in the hip-hop game is Bosko. The independent producer and artist from Portland who has worked with top headliners is still on the grind after ten years in the game. For more information on Bosko you can check out http://www.jusfamilyrecords.com/.
