Erykah Badu
Summer Nights At The Pier
August 15th was a hot
night in Seattle in more ways than one! One Reel and AT&T brought Erykah
Badu to the waterfront for yet another memorable Summer Nights At The Pier
show. Opening the show was the illustrious club magnet DJ Kutfather. He
set the mood for incense and emotion by spinning some of the best of the old
and new – Jill Scott, The Roots, Nikka Costa, Soul II Soul, Earth Wind &
Fire, the Gap Band and even a little Al Green up in the mix.
KUBE 93’s Nighttime Diva Tiffany
Warner and AT&T’s Michael Broom hosted the event, but it was evident that
the crowd wasn’t up for chit-chat. Once Erykah’s band members took their
places, applause and cheers filled the air. Ms. Badu stepped out in a
lovely scarlet ensemble that was magnified by the ultra pink sunset taking
place against the Puget Sound.
The band was dressed in ragtime
style outfits and Erykah’s head wrap was complete with a blood-red flower
placed over her ear. She lit up the venue with songs like “In Love With
You” as the purple and yellow lights enhanced the smoky stage. With
trademark candle and incense were nearby, she flowed into “Didn’t You Know”,
and as she stepped into the first bars of “Cleva” she ripped off the red
head wrap to expose her shimmering bald head. The crowd cheered in delight
as she ripped the song with her captivating showmanship.
Clove cigarettes and incense
were being lit in the audience and the scent in the venue was hypnotic. As
the set went on, Erykah stripped off the red outfit to expose a black dress
with a looooong slit up the side, showing off a pair of glitter go-go
boots. She sang “Kiss Me On My Neck” with so much sensuality she left
mouths agape. The black backdrop was ablaze with white lights, looking much
like stars, as she kept the maximum capacity crowd flowing, singing and
screaming for more into the moonlit sky.
To quote Tiffany Warner – the
show was “incredible!” Seattle has had a great series of delicious shows
this summer, and Erykah was like the cherry on top.
